The central concept in information theory is entropy, which measures the amount of uncertainty or randomness in a signal or message.

Coding theory is a subfield of information theory that deals with the efficient representation and transmission of information. A code is a method for representing a message using a smaller number of bits than the original message. There are two main types of codes: error-correcting codes and error-detecting codes. Error-correcting codes are used to detect and correct errors that occur during the transmission of a message, while error-detecting codes are used to detect errors but not correct them.

One of the famous application of information theory is lossless data compression, which is the process of reducing the size of a file without losing any information.

Another application of information theory is in channel coding, which deals with reliably transmitting a message over a noisy communication channel. The goal of channel coding is to design codes that can correct errors that occur during transmission.
